5th extraordinary OIC summit began today with SOM agreeing to RI’s proposals

Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) opened today a meeting focused on intensifying the solidarity with the Palestinian people on the international scene.

Members of the 57-member OIC are attending this meeting, as well as guests from the United Nations and the European Union.

An encounter of Foreign ministers has been scheduled for tomorrow, and later a summit of top leaders will be held.

This OIC meeting is held at a request by President of the State of Palestine, Mahmoud Abbas, to discuss the Israeli occupation of territories and its violations in the Al Aqsa mosque compound, among other issues.

Purposes of the meeting include promoting strategies against that Israeli policy and going in depth into the ever worsening plight of the Palestinian people and the ways to reinforce the OIC members’ support to that nation.

In a communique today, the Indonesian Foreign Ministry expressed concern about the development of the political and security situation in the Middle East that makes the international community divert its attention from the Palestinian issue.

SOM agrees to RI’s proposals

However, the Senior Officials Meeting (SOM) of the 5th Extraordinary Summit held behind the closed door here on Sunday bears fruit to Indonesia’s hard work.

The SOM agreed to Indonesia’s proposal for outcome documents in the form of resolution and declaration, Director General of Multilateral Affairs at the Indonesian Foreign Ministry Hasan Kleib said a moment before accompanying Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi at a ministerial level meeting.

Kleib who chaired the SOM said all draft resolutions and declarations were agreed upon at the meeting with several changes.

“There is no fundamental change. Only a few things were added or omitted following a general debate among chiefs of delegations,” he said.

The discussion of the Indonesian proposal at the ministerial meeting will be faster than expected as it has been agreed upon at the SOM, he said.

Indonesia has proposed two documents as the outcome of the 5th Extraordinary OIC Summit on Palestine and Al Quds, namely resolution which will contain OIC fundamental stand on Palestine and declaration in the form of OICs concrete step to help Palestine.

The meeting also discussed the adoption of OIC agenda and work program, the consideration and adoption of draft agenda and work program of a ministerial preparatory meeting, and the consideration of draft Jakarta resolution and declaration on Palestine and Al-Quds Al Sharif.

The SOM was followed by a ministerial meeting at 02.00 p.m. local time. Indonesian Foreign Minister Retno LP Marsudi, Palestinian Foreign Minister Riyad al-Maliki, and OIC Secretary General Iyad Ameen Madani delivered their opening addresses to the meeting.

At the meeting, the OIC foreign ministers will discuss the adoption of the agenda and work program of ministerial level meeting, reports from the SOM, and the consideration and adoption of the Extraordinary OIC Summits work program before entering a general debate.
