Abdullah heads for Egypt to take part in new Suez Canal inauguration

Abdullah Abdullah, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the government of Afghanistan has left to Egypt to take part in the inauguration ceremony of the ‘New Suez Canal’.

Javid Faisal, Deputy Spokesperson of the CEO office said in a tweet this morning that Abdullah Abdullah will also meet with Egyptian PM during his visit.

“Afghan Chief Executive Dr. Abdullah leaves #Kabul for #Cairo to attend the inauguration of New #Suez Canal. He will also meet #Egyptian PM.” Faisal’s tweet stated.

Tight security measurements have been taken for the inauguration of the first section of the new canal project on August 6.

The project was launched by Egyptian President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi in August 2014 in a hope to improve the country’s weakening economy by doubling the revenues of its strategic canal.

The ‘New Suez Canal’ will allow vessels to travel to Asia from Europe through the Sinai Peninsula in two directions.
