Until election

Afghan government has cancelled efforts for peace

Afghan government said on Saturday it suspended efforts related to peace process until presidential election which is scheduled to be held on September 28.

Addressing a press conference in Kabul, presidential spokesman Sediq Sediqi said that election was priority, adding consultations on peace would begin after the vote.

He reiterated that the election will be held on due time and dismissed idea of forming an interim government.

“Those who call for interim government are against the republic system and Afghans,” Sediqi said.

This comes after US President Donald Trump abruptly cancelled peace talks with the Taliban over the last weekend, following months of its special envoy’s negotiations with the group.

Amid increased operations against the Taliban, Sediqi said that security situation would improve in next 10 days.

He also rejected US presidential candidate Joe Biden’sclaim of Afghanistan being “three countries.”
