The agreement in this regard was signed between EU Ambassador Pierre Mayaudon and UNDP Director Jocelyn Mason in Kabul.
The assistance will be channeled through the UN Electoral Support Project.
Mayaudon noted that the financial contribution demonstrates EU’s commitment towards supporting democracy in Afghanistan and its electoral management bodies.
He hoped that the assistance will help immensely in improving the conduct of elections, especially in the areas of public outreach and increased participation in the ongoing voter registration process.
According to the envoy, holding credible and inclusive parliamentary and district councils elections in 2018 and presidential vote in 2019 is crucial for the success of the ongoing peace process.
Thanking EU for its commitment and support to the Afghan electoral process, UNDP’s Mason noted that UNESP is the international community’s means for supporting the electoral institutions to build self-reliance, public accountability, and public confidence in the electoral process.
