Former Director of Hajj for Nimroz province killed

Former Director of Hajj and Religious Affairs for southwestern Nimroz province was killed last night by unknown gunmen.

Reports suggest that Sayed Nazir Sadat was returning from mosque after offering prayers when unidentified gunmen opened fire at him in Zaranj, the provincial capital of Nimroz, last night.

Mohammmad Ghaws, a police officer of Nimroz said the attack was carried out by two gunmen who were riding a motorcycle.

He said soon after the incident security officials arrived at the site but the attackers had fled.

Investigation has been underway to arrest the culprits, he added.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack.

Target killings of some influential people and government officials increased this week.

In a separate incident earlier this week, former district governor for Khas Urozgan district of capital almost with the same name was killed by unknown insurgents.
