Former Herat governor Fazlullah Wahidi released in Pakistan

The former provincial governor of western Herat province Fazlullah Wahidi has reportedly been released in Pakistan, nearly three weeks after he was abducted by unknown gunmen.

Sources privy of the development have said Mr. Wahidi was handed over to the diplomatic mission of Afghanistan in Peshawar city.

Mr. Wahidi was reportedly handed over around 3am of Friday, however the circumstances surrounding his release have not been ascertained so far.

It is also not clear who had kidnapped Mr. Wahid who went missing from the vicinity of Islamabad on 12th February.

According to the authorities in Pakistan, Wahidi was on a visit along with his family when he was kidnapped by the gunmen.

Wahidi has previously served as the governor of eastern Kunar and western Herat provinces of Afghanistan.

He was abducted by gunmen almost a month after a group of armed men opened fire on the residence of an Afghan diplomat in Peshawar city of Pakistan.
