Four Italian construction workers kidnapped in Libya

Four Italian construction workers have been kidnapped in Libya, the foreign ministry has said.

They were around the premises of Italian oil company Eni in the region of Mellitah, to the west of Tripoli, when they were taken, the ministry said on Monday.

It added that a crisis unit is in constant contact with the families and the company Bonatti, which employs the Italians.

Libya was plunged into chaos after the 2011 overthrow of dictator Muammar Gaddafi, with two parliaments and governments vying for power and armed groups battling for control of the country’s oil wealth.

Italy closed its embassy in Libya in February and urged its citizens to leave the country over the escalating violence
