Taliban earns more from mines than Ministry of Mines does

Afghan experts on mines believe that with the Taliban domination on most mines of the country, they earn more from these mines than what ministry of mines does.

Experts say most mines of the country especially mines in provinces such as Helmand, Badakhshan, Herat, Ghazni, Logar, Nangarhar and Kunar are under the Taliban control and that they are earning more than what Ministry of Mines and Petroleum does.

A few days ago, some members of Ghazni provincial council had said that Taliban had signed contracts with some Pakistani experts for extraction of mines in the province.

Ghazni governor Mohammad Aman Hamimi said there were evidences showing five important mines of Ghazni province are under the Taliban control and that the government has no access to them.

He added that Pakistani experts in collaboration with the Taliban group have started to extract mines in Vaghez, Zankhan and Maghar districts of the province and have so far smuggled some precious stones to Pakistan.

Earlier, network for environment monitoring and natural resources had said that there were registered companies to Ministry of Mines but they had to pay ransom to Taliban in order they can extract from the mines.

The network added “that is true, that Taliban have used mines for years as one of their main sources of incomes after opium. Even companies with registration to Afghan Ministry of Mines have had to pay ransom to Taliban in order that they can continue extracting the mines. ”

Experts on mines say, Afghan Ministry of Mines and Petroleum earned around 30 million USD in 2014, whereas it had promised it would earn 1.5 billion dollars.

In the meantime, a UN report said “during the past years, Taliban have earned tens of millions of dollars extracting mines in Afghanistan that can be placed second important sources of income for Taliban after cultivating opium.”

On the other hand, Taliban are still trying to control more mines in Afghanistan and reach an earning of three trillion dollars annually.

It is worth mentioning that Taliban earning money from extracting mines is not a new story, but there are sayings that some elements within the government are helping the Taliban.

Mineral sources of Afghanistan are estimated to worth three trillion dollars.
