Taliban’s large attack to capture Murghab district in western Badghis foiled

Security officials in western Badghis province say Taliban’s large attack to take Bala Murghab district was foiled by Afghan forces.

A spokesman for Afghan commandos in western zone Mahdi Qaderi told Raha that at least 2000 Taliban insurgents launched a coordinated attack on security posts in Bala Murghab district of western Badghis province to take the district.

However, their plot was foiled as Afghan security agency responded at once, Qaderi said.

He added that earlier they (Taliban insurgents) had captured some security posts in the district, but security forces not only foiled their plot to take full control of the district, but also re-took those lost security check posts.

Afghan forces are now in full control of the area and Taliban insurgents fled the district, leaving at least 120 of their fighters dead or wounded in the scene.

A spokesman for governor office Khalid Safi also confirmed the attack and told Raha that at least 40 Taliban insurgents were killed and more than 80 others were wounded.

He also said a number of key Taliban commanders including Qari Ehsanullah, Mullah Sarhadi and Mullah Muntazer are among the dead.

Taliban insurgents have yet to make comments on the report.
