Unknown gunmen shot dead local reporter in Nangarhar

An Afghan journalist was shot dead in Afghanistan’s eastern province of Nangarhar overnight, the provincial government said on Saturday.

“Mohammad Zubair Khaksar was martyred after unknown gunmen fired four rounds of pistols on his vehicle on road in Surkh Rod district Friday night,” it said in a statement.

Khaksar, a well-known poet, was serving as a journalist in the provincial branch of the government-run Afghanistan National Radio and Television Network, the statement added.

He was also a cultural advisor for provincial governor Salim Khan Kandozai, according to the statement.

Governor Kandozai condemned the attack, the statement said, adding that local authorities have launched an investigation into the incident.

No group has so far claimed responsibility for the attack.

Earlier in January, seven media workers of a private TV channel were killed and 24 others wounded after a Taliban suicide car bombing struck a minibus in Afghan capital Kabul.
