Pompeo said this after being asked by US Senator Linsey Graham if the Afghan government will be a meaningful participant in any peace deal.
“More than that, they will be at the center. It will be Afghan-led,” Pompeo replied in a testimony before a Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on the president’s 2020 State Department budget request.
The Trump administration requested about $40 billion to fund the State Department and its aid arm, the United States Agency for International Development, for the fiscal year starting in October. That is 21 percent below the FY 2019 enacted level.
Graham said that US cannot win war in Afghanistan by dropping bombs alone, as he stressed on investing on lives.
Pompeo confirmed that the peace process outcome in Afghanistan would involve dignity for women.
