Afghan Govt to issue electronic ID cards to migrants in Iran

The Central Statistic Organization (CSO) on Wednesday said that the government of Afghanistan will start the process of distributing electronic ID cards to nearly three million Afghan immigrants in Iran.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Central Statistics Organization and the Ministry of Refugees and Repatriation have signed a memorandum of understanding on the distribution of electronic ID cards to Afghan citizens in Iran.

Ahmad Javid Rasouli, head of the CSO, said it is expected that next week two centers for ID card distribution will be launched in the Iranian cities of Tehran and Mashhad.

Rasouli said that the process of distributing ID cards to citizens of the country in other countries will also begin with the cooperation of the Foreign Affairs and Refugees and Repatriation Ministries.

“Regarding other countries, we are working on a comprehensive program with our partners at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and a few countries that are on hand are European countries, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, and some other countries,” said Rasouli, head of the CSO.

“Issuing electronic IDs also has a process–how should we establish it? Who is Afghan and where does he or she live and how are the necessary guarantees made?” said Mirwais Nab, deputy foreign minister for economic cooperation.

The Afghan government said that the distribution of identity cards to Afghan refugees is to make it easier to establish their legal status and to facilitate easier access to educational services.

“Today, the process begins and our immigrants and Afghans abroad will receive electronic IDs,” said Alema, deputy minister of refugees and repatriation.

The Ministry of Refugees and Repatriation says that about six million citizens have sought refuge in other countries, five million of whom are in Iran and Pakistan.
