Afghan journalist gunned down in another targeted attack

Rahmatullah Nikzad was gunned down outside his home in Ghazni province on Monday evening, police have confirmed.

Nikzad, who did work for The Associated Press and who was the head of the province’s Journalist Union, reportedly survived a similar attack in September last year.

His death now brings the total to five journalists killed in just over a month in the country.  The Taliban were quick to deny any involvement in Nikzad’s death.  In a message on Twitter, the Taliban stated: “We are saddened to learn that a professional journalist, Rahmatullah Nikzad, has been martyred in Ghazni.

“We strongly condemn this cowardly act and offer our condolences to the family of Mr. Nikzad. “Nikzad had a very good relationship with us as a committed journalist,” the Taliban’s spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid tweeted.
