Nikzad, who did work for The Associated Press and who was the head of the province’s Journalist Union, reportedly survived a similar attack in September last year.
His death now brings the total to five journalists killed in just over a month in the country. The Taliban were quick to deny any involvement in Nikzad’s death. In a message on Twitter, the Taliban stated: “We are saddened to learn that a professional journalist, Rahmatullah Nikzad, has been martyred in Ghazni.
“We strongly condemn this cowardly act and offer our condolences to the family of Mr. Nikzad. “Nikzad had a very good relationship with us as a committed journalist,” the Taliban’s spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid tweeted.
