After man drives into crowd, 5 killed, dozens injured

Zigzagging an SUV at high speed through a pedestrian zone in the southwestern German city of Trier on Tuesday, the 51-year-old German man seriously injured at least 19 people and killed five people including a 9-month-old Baby, while drunk driving.

According to media sources the baby was 9-weeks-old and her father 45 are among the killed in the incident.

The driver was a German-born in Trier, was arrested at the scene and the vehicle was impounded, according to German officials, he had no fixed address and was living in a Land Rover a friend lent him.

Three other victims aged between 25 to 73 were residents of Trier and all were women, who were killed in the incident, babies’ mother was among the hospitalized victims.

The suspect whose name was not revealed is expected to undergo a psychiatric examination, preliminary results indicated the man is suffering from mental illness.

Police did not link the incident to have a political or religious motive, while a prosecutor told media, the suspect was drunk and may have had a mental illness.

Following the attack city’s Mayor Leibe told media, “We have a driver who ran amok in the city…” adding that “I just walked through the city center and it was just horrible. There is a trainer lying on the ground, and the girl it belongs to is dead.”

The mayor whined, “I can’t understand how someone gets the idea to drive through the city center with an SUV to kill people”

“Kill people – a baby, nine months old, to a woman 72 years old; what did these people do? They just wanted to go to the city, shop, and now they are dead.” He said.

Trier – the birthplace of Karl Marx – is on the border with Luxembourg and has a population of about 110,000.

It is four years since a terrorist drove a truck through a Christmas market in Berlin, killing 12 people.
