Anti-Taliban statue demolished in Bamyan after the group took power

The Statue of Abdul-Ali Mazari founder of Afghanistan Islamic United Party who represented mostly Hazara and Shiite ethnic community in Afghanistan was decapitated yesterday evening in central Bamyan province.

Abdul-Ali Mazari was one of famous Afghan anti-Taliban leaders who was captured and killed by Taliban in 1995, after he departed for the group for peace talks.

Some local residents lay the blame on Taliban fighters, but the group rejected the accusations.

Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid told reporters yesterday that the group has declared general parole and all Afghans from different ethnicities can live peacefully in the country.
