Atmar election team doesn’t attend Loya Jirga

Mohammad Haneef Atmar, former national security adviser to President Ashraf Ghani and a leading electoral rival, has boycotted consultative Loya Jirga on peace.

He called Loya Jirga an election campaign.

The consultative Loya Jirga is expected to be held later this month.

The announcement comes a day after the government chief executive, Abdullah Abdullah, also refused to attend the gathering.

In a statement, Atmar election team called “Peace and Moderation” rejected the upcoming meeting as nothing but the government’s time-wasting in peace process and illegal election campaign effort.

It said that no one from the team will participate in the event. Atmar’s running mates are Yunus Qanooni and Mohammad Mohaqiq.

Atmar team’s statement said that it had urged the government to consult with it over goals, agenda and participants of the meeting, but it didn’t. It said that there is no transparency in preparations for the meeting.
