China foreign minister met Karzai in Beijing

State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi met in Beijing with former President Hamid Karzai of Afghanistan, who came to China for the 2019 Imperial Springs International Forum.

Wang Yi said, the situation of Afghanistan and its process of peace and reconciliation are at a critical juncture.

It is imperative that both the United States (US)-Taliban peace talks and the intra-Afghan dialogue should make progress and yield results. The US and the Taliban should resume peace talks as soon as possible to produce results and peace, bringing about an orderly and complete withdrawal of the US and other foreign troops.

The intra-Afghan dialogue should also be launched as soon as possible to reach unity and consensus so that the future of Afghanistan can be truly held in the hands of the Afghan people. China always respects the independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity of Afghanistan and has never interfered in its internal affairs. We are willing to continue to play a constructive role in advancing the process of peace and reconciliation in Afghanistan in accordance with the wishes of the Afghan people and the needs of all parties in Afghanistan.

Hamid Karzai said, China has always been a steadfast, long-lasting and sincere cooperative partner of Afghanistan and a major country that truly hopes that lasting peace can be achieved in Afghanistan.

The Afghan people cherish the traditional friendship with China and look forward to strengthening ties with China in all areas.

The Chinese side has provided a great deal of generous assistance for Afghanistan’s peaceful reconstruction and development and played an important role in maintaining regional peace, stability and prosperity. Over the years, the Chinese side has maintained close communication with the Afghan side and actively promoted its process of peace and reconciliation, which has been welcomed by all parties.

The Afghan side sincerely appreciates the Chinese side’s efforts to facilitate the intra-Afghan dialogue and is willing to strengthen coordination with the Chinese side to promote an early launch of the dialogue.
