German women kidnapped in Kabul just freed

Germany’s foreign minister says a German woman who was kidnapped two months ago in the Afghan capital, Kabul, has been freed.

Frank-Walter Steinmeier said in a statement Saturday that he was “very relieved” the German was free and that she is “doing well considering the circumstances.”

He gave no details of the woman’s release but thanked the Afghan government, its security forces and Germany’s partners in the NATO-led Resolute Support mission in Afghanistan.

The woman, who has not been identified, is believed to be employed by German aid agency GIZ.
