Taliban faction appoints new leader in south. Afghanistan

Taliban rival faction group in southern Zabul province has appointed a new leader after its leader was killed in infighting last year.

According to Reuters, the faction group known as Mahaaz-e-Dadullah at a gathering in southern Zabul province of Afghanistan named Mullah Emdadullah Mansoor as its new leader on Monday.

Mullah Emdadullah Mansoor is said to be nephew of the slain leader Mullah Mansoor Dadullah.

In a video showing the gathering developed by the faction group, a number of tribal and religious leaders of the faction group attended the meeting and appointed Emdadullah as their new leader.

The video also shows Mansoor accepting the leadership position among a crowd of gunmen.

Mullah Mansoor Dadullah was killed in Khak-e-Afghan district of Zabul last year, fighting with rival Taliban.

The new leader Emdadullah Mansoor promised to “fight foreign forces” and exact revenge for the group’s slain leader.
