To show good will for peace some Taliban-linked prisoners should be released

Former Afghan President Hamid Karzai on Wednesday called for release of some prisoners linked to the Taliban as a gesture of goodwill for peace.

The call comes a day after longest round of peace talks between the United States and the Taliban in Qatar concluded, with the sides citing progress.

In a statement, Karzai welcomed “positive results” of the talks in Doha.

“Considering the recent progress in peace talks, I call on all parties to stop fighting and bloodshed and agree on a nationwide ceasefire,” Karzai said.

He also called on the Afghan government to immediately release elderly, ill and innocent prisoners linked to Taliban, as a gesture of goodwill.
