UN urges member states to join fight against IS

The United Nations has urged all states to join the fight against the Islamic State (IS) and redouble efforts to prevent further attacks by the militant group

The council adopted a unanimous resolution on Friday that was drafted by France after a series of deadly attacks in Paris killed 130 people. The attacks were claimed by the dreaded group.

In the resolution, the 15-member body said: “The Islamic State constitutes a global and unprecedented threat to international peace and security.”

Also known by its Arabic acronym of Daesh, the group has recently claimed responsibility for shooting downing a Russian passenger plane in Egypt, killing all 224 people on board, besides attacks in Lebanon, Turkey and Tunisia.

The resolution called upon member states to intensify efforts to stem the flow of foreigners looking to fight with IS in Iraq and Syria and to prevent financing of terrorism.
